“I’m under absolutely no obligation to make sense to you”

There are some books that you just know, after only a few pages, are going to be magical. For me, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was one of these books. What a magnificent book this was. What a narrative. Evelyn is such a good-written character. She is an intelligent and complex woman, but what made her special is that she understood that no human is black or white . And didn’t pretend to be good. She is raw and addictive, and while some people may call her manipulative, I believe she knew how to play the patriarchy because she understood what was expected from women. She created a fake self to protect her true self and her loved ones. The other characters were not as developed but It honestly doesn’t matter because they served their purpose and I wasn’t interested in learning more about them.I was completely captivated by Evelyn. She had the same effect on me she did on the people in the story.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“If I’m going to tell you about my life, if I’m going to tell you what really happened, the truth behind all of my marriages, the movies I shot, the people I loved, who I slept with, who I hurt, how I compromised myself, and where it all landed me, then I need to know that you understand me. I need to know that you will listen to exactly what I’m trying to tell you and not place your own assumptions into my story.”

“It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.”
