My Rating – 4 Stars (Cormoran Strike #1)
By Robert Galbraith (Pseudonym), J.K. Rowling
Published in 2013
Plot : After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
I had this book lying around for such a long period of time , as lately I was super engrossed in reading YA contemporaries and obsessing over Korean Dramas . But I had to say I was shocked by the book . Of course , no doubt about the fact that J.K Rowling is one of the celebrated author of all times and Harry potter being everyone’s favorite. Nevertheless , the book was exceptionally good . I am huge fan of Crime fictions and murder mystery especially the ones by Agatha Christie .But this was altogether different. The detective , Cormoran Strike is not our usual Hercule Piorot or Sherlock Holmes but he is altogether different. He displays no such skills until later in the book. Inspite of that, he is able to strike a connection with the readers. He is a war veteran and his detective agency is on the verge of bankruptcy when the re-investigation of suicide of supermodel Lula Landry case comes into his hand.
Cormoran Strike follows the case of the dead model and he discovers so many facts along with newly hired secretary , Robin . He embarks on a deceptive game of the rich and influential . I have to say the plot of the book was a masterpiece and brought a adrenaline rush in me to know the true culprit. There were so many suspicious characters that it was difficult to point your fingers at the murderer.
The book is really descriptive , the reader is given ample amount of information and when the story reaches the climax , the murderer is one we couldn’t ever fathom . I am glad that I read this book on a spur of moment. If murder -mystery is your genre then this is the book for you .

I had this book with me for a long time. As you said, it was descriptive, and I found it a bit slow hence I stopped reading maybe I should give it a second try

Do give it a try, I liked it very much–also the second one in the series though it took a bit of time to get into it.

I have the book series and my friend loves it, too. I have yet to read it but was absolutely absorbed into the show. Tom Burke is a favorite actor of mine and he’s a wonderful Cormon

I am yet to read the complete series but super excited. Tom Burke might have done justice to the character.💕

I hope you continue with the other Cormoran Strike books, they’re all great reads. I’m a huge fan of Robin, his assistant – such an endearing character.

I read this book a while ago but I remember that I predicted the plot twist to myself as a joke at the beginning of the book and was SHOOK when it actually happened 😂

I really liked the «Cuckoos Calling» as well, but the second book did slightly disappoint me. But I’m interested to see what else JK Rowling comes up with!

Awesome review! I’ve read this a few years back and I really enjoyed it. It’s very different from the usual detective stories in a way it focuses on the characters’ personalities and development. Loved it ❤️

I’ve been thinking about reading these for a while, but after this amazing review they are officially on the TBR! I am always a bit sceptical about books like this, because they are often quite misogynist (have you ever read any Ian Rankin? It’s BAD) but I have to trust that JK would never do that to us.

Great review as usual! I love this book (and well, series) very much! When I first read it, it was so exhilarating, and the relationship between Robin and Strike is definitely promising. One of the reasons the story seemed to flow so well, I would say! Really glad to know that you enjoyed it, I hope you’ll be able to read the sequels soon!
